The interaction focused on exploring possibilities to further expand the existing collaboration between UI and WSU in the areas of capacity building, research collaboration, staff and students exchange programmes, Postdoctoral training programmes, sabbatical placement, skill acquisition and external supervision of graduate students. Professor Rob Midgley and his team visited the Office of International Programmes (OIP) where they were welcomed by the staff of the OIP and Professor E. A. Ajani, Head, Department Aquaculture and Fisheries Management. The team watched a documentary on the University of Ibadan and a presentation on the activities of the OIP was made by a staff of the OIP in order to provide the guests with adequate information about UI.

The guests visited the Department Aquaculture and Fisheries Management where they were received by the Head of Department, Professor E. A. Ajani and faculty members in the department. Professor Rob Midgley provided information about Walter Sisulu University and stated that the institution is willing to engage in joint research work that will enable members of the local community to acquire entrepreneurial skills required to engage in agribusiness and other small scale businesses. This will also serve as a means of contributing to the society in view of the fact that Walter Sisulu University is located in a rural neighborhood. The guests visited the UI fish farm, where they were shown the processes involved in fish farming and production/processing.

The guests met with the Dean of Pharmacy, Professor C. P. Babalola and engaged in discussions with faculty members. The existing relationship between UI and WSU started in the faculty of Pharmacy through which Dr. Taiwo Olayemi Elufioye of the Department Pharmacognosy, initiated a postdoctoral research proposal with contributions from Professor Oyedeji. The parties agreed to strengthen the partnership by reconnecting to explore other joint research opportunities. The guests were also taken round the laboratory for Centre for Drug Discovery, Development and Production (CDDDP) to see the facilities. They were shown natural food supplements and hand sanitizers produced by the Centre and they indicated willingness to collaborate with the faculty and centre in order to produce similar products in their institution.

The team also visited the Faculty of Science, where they were welcomed by the Dean, Professor A. A. Onilude and the faculty members. The interactions focused on having collaboration in the areas of environmental and energy security, sabbatical placement, external supervision of postgraduate students and post doctoral training programs. While visiting the Faculty of Law, the discussion focused on modalities for collaboration in the areas of staff and students exchange, short-term visits and joint research activities in the field of Public Law. The guests were hosted by the Dean, Professor Adeniyi A. Olatunbosun and other faculty members.

During an interaction with the Director of the Research Management Office, Professor Oyeronke Odunola, the team from WSU emphasized the need for both institutions to share experiences in terms of research management and also exploit the bilateral relationship and agreement between Nigeria and South Africa towards advancing both institutions collaboration in respect of funding/grants. Other discussions were held regarding exploring possibilities of policy exchange, conference collaboration and capacity building on the platform of existing partnership between both institutions.

The guests also participated in the 2016 convocation ceremonies and 68th Foundation Day Anniversary of the University of Ibadan. Professor Rob Midgley gave a goodwill message during the convocation ceremony. Before departing UI, the guests paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka. In attendance were the Dean, Postgraduate School, Professor A.A. Aderinto, Professor Bolanle O. Adeniyi, Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Dr. I. A. Abiona, Deputy Dean of Students, Mr. Tunji Oladejo, Director, Directorate of Public Communication, Mr. Afolabi, Principal Assistant Registrar, Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), and staff of the OIP. In order to further expand the existing collaboration between the two institutions, the University of Ibadan renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Walter Sisulu University (WSU), South Africa during the signing ceremony which took place at the VC’s Office.
